Meningitis C
vaccine 'wears off in early teens' - Three-quarters of children
vaccinated against meningitis C lose their protection against the
disease by their early teens, research suggests. - BBC - "Professor
Pollard said: 'This study is just the latest to show that the personal
protection given by meningitis C vaccines in early childhood doesn't
last forever and several countries have now responded to these findings
by introducing teenage boosters, before protection fails in the
population.'"

Tells
FDA
to Keep Rotavirus Vaccines Available - MedPage Today -
"Members of an FDA advisory panel agreed that the two approved
rotavirus vaccines -- Merck's RotaTeq and GlaxoSmithKline's Rotarix --
should continue to be used, despite known contamination with a pig
virus. ... In both cases, PCV was detected using a new and more
sensitive test than was previously used, and the panel warned that more
contaminants will likely be found as labs start to implement advance
detection methods to test vaccines for viruses and other contaminants.
'There are some very difficult times ahead,' warned panel chairman Jack
Stapleton, MD, director of infectious diseases at the University of
Iowa Hospital Clinic."
* May 7, 2010 - Benefits
trump risks of rotavirus vaccine-US panel - The benefits of
rotavirus vaccines from GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L) and Merck & Co
Inc (MRK.N) outweigh any risk from recently discovered contamination
with a pig virus, members of a U.S. advisory panel said on Friday. -
Reuters - " Any risks "are at best theoretical," said Dr. Melinda
Wharton, a panelist and deputy director of the Center for Disease
Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and
Respiratory Diseases. 'Based on where we are with current knowledge, to
me the known benefits clearly outweigh the risks,' she said."

"Professor Terry Nolan, the chair of the Australian Technical Advisory

the State Government decided to rely on the ACIR. However, a software
problem with at least one major product had prevented GPs from
uploading the data, he said, arguing it was vital to obtain baseline
numbers of vaccinated children to accurately determine the rate of
adverse events."

of
measles
confirmed in Calgary - Those exposed should monitor
symptoms - Calgary Herald - "If the potentially exposed people haven’t
already had measles or been vaccinated, they could be at risk for
developing the disease, said Dr. Judy MacDonald, AHS medical officer of
health for Calgary. ... A child under the age of five is recovering at
home after contracting the disease, MacDonald said. It’s not yet
certain where the child was first exposed to measles, although health
officials are looking into whether a relative who had similar symptoms
may have had the disease. The child had received the first dose of
vaccination but wasn’t yet old enough to receive the second dose,
MacDonald said."
