She hails Wakefield as a martyr, condemned merely for questioning the MMR vaccine's safety.  As for [Dr. Andrew] Wakefield's supposed unscrupulous behavior, Goes points to a Dec. 18 New York Times story. It reported that, in 2007, most of the members of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advisory panel that evaluated flu and cervical cancer vaccines had possible, unsettled conflicts of interest. And many are angry that government officials failed to ward off such hazards. Why should they believe experts' assurances about vaccines and autism? It doesn't help that science can't explain the apparent explosion of autism cases, now an average of 1 in 110 children, which just happened to coincide with an expanded childhood vaccine schedule. And now, filled with vaccine doubts, many parents no longer view childhood immunization as their civic responsibility but as a personal responsibility - and potential risk - to their children."

The CDC terms this refusal to vaccinate children a 'philosophical objection,' but we will be less polite. The entire movement is based on bad science. Many claims have been made that a variety of vaccinations can cause autism in children, but the most famous scientific study to make such a link, by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, has been conclusively debunked. Remembering the threat of litigation if journalists should try to reveal the immunisation status of the child of the then Prime Minister, I can only conclude that Mr Deer either covered his back and went through the correct procedures, or else that he assumed that the parents would have no appetite, or money, to take him, his newspaper or the hospital Trust to court for violating their privacy. * ?March 1, 2010 - Letters: Evaluate autism research - Sioux Falls Argus Leader - "In response to the article in the Feb. 3 Argus Leader "Study linking vaccines, autism a sham," I want to address both sides of this issue. The mainstream view is, of course, that the data in the original study by British surgeon and medical researcher Andrew Wakefield is inconclusive, no link was found and vaccines do not cause autism. Wakefield selected 12 children with autism and with existing gastrointestinal problems, known as problematic in many autistic children. Wakefield never has stated the study was conclusive."

And some of the country’s lowest vaccination rates are in places like Berkeley, Calif., and Boulder, Colo., according to Arthur Allen, the author of 'Vaccine: The Controversial Story of Medicine’s Greatest Lifesaver.’ 'It’s sort of where the intellectual hippies meet the black helicopter crowd,’ Allen said."

The guy still found live mumps and measles viruses in the digestive tracts of the autistic children he studied. Other medical professionals verified his findings. If the viruses didn’t come from the triple-whammy MMR shot, then where did they come from? How do you get rid of them? Why isn’t anyone else asking these questions?"

A journal’s ability to tell good science from bad is critical. But some journals have used poor judgment, and even replaced judgment with a bias of their own."

* ?February 23, 2010 - Expert: H1N1 Vaccines Do Not Contain Mercury (includes video) - WCCO.com - "'There's been dozens and dozens of studies that have not shown any link, at all, between vaccines and autism,' said Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist Patsy Stinchfield. She said it is saddening how a flawed 1998 British study caused childhood disease rates to climb as fears of autism made vaccination rates for measles, mumps and rubella fall. Last month that research by Dr. Andrew Wakefield was declared unethical. However, suspicions for all vaccines linger. One reason surrounds the vaccine preservative Thimerosal which contains trace amounts of mercury. Most H1N1 flu vaccines don't contain any mercury. 'The nasal does not have mercury in it. The individual flu vaccine doses does not have mercury in it,' said Stinchfield. 'All of our normal childhood vaccines have no mercury in it.'"
