Frontline aired an episode on the vaccine-autism story. I'm not going to call
it a controversy, because it isn't. Vaccines don't cause autism, the science
is clear. Both the MMR-causes-autism and thimerosal-in-vaccines hypotheses have
been explored extensively. Neither notion holds water. I've written previously
about the vaccine-autism mythology, especially the Andrew
Wakefield-inspired MMR-autism fiasco."

amiss with the interpretation of the histopathology results in the study. This
should finally knock on the head the claim made by Deer first in the Sunday

"However, LJ Goes of New Lenox, mother of a 3½-year-old son who was diagnosed
with autism last year, feels quite differently. She hails Wakefield as a martyr,
condemned merely for questioning the MMR vaccine's safety. As for [Dr. Andrew]
Wakefield's supposed unscrupulous behavior, Goes points to a Dec. 18 New York
Times story. It reported that, in 2007, most of the members of a Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) advisory panel that evaluated flu and cervical cancer
vaccines had possible, unsettled conflicts of interest. Goes added that the CDC,
on its website, contradicts itself regarding vaccine safety."

April 21, 2010 - We

parents are keenly aware of environmental risks, from lead in toys to toxic
chemicals in baby bottles. And many are angry that government officials failed
to ward off such hazards. Why should they believe experts' assurances about
vaccines and autism? It doesn't help that science can't explain the apparent
explosion of autism cases, now an average of 1 in 110 children, which just
happened to coincide with an expanded childhood vaccine schedule. And now,
filled with vaccine doubts, many parents no longer view childhood immunization
as their civic responsibility but as a personal responsibility - and potential
risk - to their children."

western countries, including Canada. The CDC terms this refusal to vaccinate
children a 'philosophical objection,' but we will be less polite. The entire
movement is based on bad science. Many claims have been made that a variety of
vaccinations can cause autism in children, but the most famous scientific study
to make such a link, by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, has been conclusively debunked.
The journal in which it was published, The Lancet, recently completely retracted
the study."

that a journalist for a lay newspaper under orders to find a big story (Mr

consent from the parents? Was he not given instructions to destroy all
information which could possibly identify individuals as soon as he had
extracted what he needed, in which case he should no longer hold names and
addresses? Remembering the threat of litigation if journalists should try to
reveal the immunisation status of the child of the then Prime Minister, I can
only conclude that Mr Deer either covered his back and went through the correct

their privacy. I await his clarification with interest."

Unproven Vaccine-Autism Link - 1 in 4 parents believes unproven
vaccine-autism link, but most do what doctor says is best - AP via ABC News -
"Some doctors are taking a tough stand, asking vaccine-refusing parents to find
other doctors and calling such parents 'selfish.' A statement from a group
practice near Philadelphia outlines its doctors' adamant support for government
recommended vaccines and their belief that 'vaccines do not cause autism or
other developmental disabilities.' 'Furthermore, by not vaccinating your child
you are taking selfish advantage of thousands of other who do vaccinate their
children ... We feel such an attitude to be self-centered and unacceptable,' the
statement says, urging those who 'absolutely refuse' vaccines to find another
physician. 'We call it the manifesto,' said Dr. Bradley Dyer of All Star
Pediatrics in Lionville, Pa."

the vaccines - editorial - Chicago Tribune - "Earlier this month, Lancet
editors issued a startling statement: "We fully retract this paper from the
published record." It was a humbling admission. It came too late. The article,
combined with many anecdotal cases, scared people. No one can help but be
rattled by the accounts of vibrant, lively toddlers who, within days or weeks of
receiving a vaccine, retreated from human contact and showed other signs of
autism. Many parents decided that the dangers of vaccines far outweighed the
risks. And that created some significant health risks."

Eye to the truth - Private Eye’s feeble apology for its support for Dr
Andrew Wakefield reminds us of the media’s uncritical complicity in the
MMR-autism theory. - Here’s a sentence I never expected to read: ‘Private
Eye got it wrong in its coverage of MMR.’ Of course, even a degree of
contrition over its egregious record of support for Dr Andrew
Wakefield, whom the General Medical Council recently judged guilty of
dishonesty and irresponsibility, is welcome. But the Eye’s apology falls
far short of acknowledging the true scale of its failure – which is symptomatic
of the wider failure of the media in relation to the MMR/autism controversy. -

Evaluate autism research - Sioux Falls Argus Leader - "In response to the
article in the Feb. 3 Argus Leader "Study linking vaccines, autism a sham," I
want to address both sides of this issue. The mainstream view is, of course,
that the data in the original study by British surgeon and medical researcher
Andrew Wakefield is inconclusive, no link was found and vaccines do not cause
autism. Wakefield selected 12 children with autism and with existing
gastrointestinal problems, known as problematic in many autistic children.
Wakefield never has stated the study was conclusive."

The Boston Globe - "The doubters are often educated and affluent: When she
practiced pediatrics in inner-city Philadelphia, Dr. Meg Fisher rarely saw
parents who questioned vaccines, but in the New Jersey suburbs where she now
works, the skeptics are more plentiful. And some of the country’s lowest
vaccination rates are in places like Berkeley, Calif., and Boulder, Colo.,
according to Arthur Allen, the author of 'Vaccine: The Controversial Story of
Medicine’s Greatest Lifesaver.’ 'It’s sort of where the intellectual hippies
meet the black helicopter crowd,’ Allen said."

Dr. Wakefield’s science invalid. The guy still found live mumps and measles
viruses in the digestive tracts of the autistic children he studied. Other
medical professionals verified his findings. If the viruses didn’t come from the
triple-whammy MMR shot, then where did they come from? How do you get rid of
them? Why isn’t anyone else asking these questions?"

journal’s ability to tell good science from bad is critical. But some journals
have used poor judgment, and even replaced judgment with a bias of their

Vaccines Do Not Contain Mercury (includes video) - WCCO.com - "'There's been
dozens and dozens of studies that have not shown any link, at all, between
vaccines and autism,' said Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist Patsy
Stinchfield. She said it is saddening how a flawed 1998 British study caused
childhood disease rates to climb as fears of autism made vaccination rates for
measles, mumps and rubella fall. Last month that research by Dr. Andrew
Wakefield was declared unethical. However, suspicions for all vaccines linger.
One reason surrounds the vaccine preservative Thimerosal which contains trace
amounts of mercury. Most H1N1 flu vaccines don't contain any mercury. 'The nasal
does not have mercury in it. The individual flu vaccine doses does not have
mercury in it,' said Stinchfield. 'All of our normal childhood vaccines have no
mercury in it.'"
