* ►May 4, 2010 - New
lab to keep control of drugs
- Medical scientists will be able to keep greater control of
breakthrough drugs such as Ian Frazer's cervical cancer vaccine, rather
than having to sign away the rights to pharmaceutical companies early
in the development process. - The Australian
* ►May 3, 2010 - Multiple
vaccines overloading infant's immune systems?
by Hilary Butler - Hilary's Desk via Beyond Conformity - "'Not
possible!' said Dr Paul Offit who believes that the medical profession
can happily inject babies with up to 100,000 vaccines at any one time,
and the baby's immune system will be just fine. This 'dogma' is
repeated by all and sundry, including GP's, IMAC and many other medics
on autopilot. The theoretical 'mathematical model' Dr Offit touted, has
just taken it's second 'hit' in two years."

DNA
referees
- Scientists are just beginning to understand the effect lifestyle
choices and other environmental factors have on altering gene behavior,
a rapidly emerging field called epigenetics. - Los Angeles times -
"'The thing I love about epigenetics is that you have the potential to
alter your destiny,' says Randy Jirtle, who studies epigenetics at Duke
University Medical Center in Durham, N.C."
* ►May 3, 2010 -
Can
you master your own epigenetics?
- Some authors say so. Epigenetics researchers say it’s probably too
early to be certain. - Los Angeles Times - "It's true that diet or
medication might change patterns of gene activity, says Dana Dolinoy, a
toxicologist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in
Ann Arbor. But, she notes, those changes could be good or bad, and it's
too soon to make broad recommendations on such a young science. She
also notes that so far most epigenetics research has been conducted in
mice. 'What's good for a mouse may not be good for me,' Dolinoy says."
* ►May 3, 2010 - ‘Why
we resorted to DNA test for Pfizer victims’
- Daily Sun - "The Board of Trustees of Meningitis Trust Fund in Kano
has explained why it resorted to the use of a DNA as a means to
ascertain the veracity of the claims of the applicants who have filed
up as victims of the Trovan Clinical Trial as a result of the 1996
meningitis epidemic in the state. The board, which was set up in the
wake of the out-of- court settlement between the Kano State Government
and the multinational pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, is to implement
the agreement and ensure payment of the money to the qualified victims."

* ►May 3, 2010 - Suit: HPV
Vaccine Injured Teen
- Albuquerque Journal via PharmaLive - "A vaccine intended to protect
women from cervical cancer severely injured an Albuquerque girl who
received the three-shot series in 2007 and 2008, a federal lawsuit
contends. The lawsuit, filed last month, alleges the 16-year-old girl
was diagnosed with a seizure disorder, encephalitis and other health
problems after she received Gardasil injections beginning at age 13.
'She was a normal 13-year-old, a normal kid,' the girl’s mother, Tracy
Wolf, said in an interview. 'Now she’s like an unruly toddler.' Alexis
has run away on occasion and has uncontrolled fits of anger, her mother
said."

'Holy
grail' of cancer vaccines one step closer
- New Zealand Herald - "Wellington's Malaghan Institute of Medical
Research director, Professor Graham Le Gros, said today New Zealand's
own research into cancer vaccines had got 'tantalisingly close' to
achieving its promises. A vaccine for a brain tumour was halfway
through a trial, while a vaccine for melanoma had been developed and
was awaiting trial, Professor Le Gros said."
* ►May 3, 2010 - The
First Cancer Vaccine - The Science Business Blog via Forbes - "One
disappointing part of the recent news is the price: Dendreon announced
that it will charge $93,000 per patient. That’s an awful lot of money,
and it’s not clear yet if insurance will cover this. No doubt desperate
patients will be glad to pay for the few extra months of life. In fact,
Dendreon said that its price is based on the assumption that people
will pay $23,000 per extra month of life, based on the cost of
other cancer drugs. We can only hope the price will drop dramatically
as the company improves its manufacturing process, but (unfortunately)
lower production costs don’t always get passed on to patients."

Is
Merck
Engaged? - The Huffington Post - "But here's where I differ
with Merck Engage. On a site that is so comprehensive, so compellingly
simple in its explanations of how easy it is to adopt a healthy
lifestyle, there is nothing about prevention of disease...the key
element in living healthfully. Now I know they are a pharmaceutical
giant and their bread and butter is based on treating illness with
drugs, but on a website so clearly designed for living healthy, active
lives, the omission of prevention is glaring and the biggest reminder
that you are, in fact, on a website designed by a pharmaceutical giant.
Once you are in need of their medications, then they are happy to help
you deal with it, but prevention? As Jon Stewart says, "not so much."
* ►May 3, 2010 - These
detectives solve medical mysteries
- book review - The Boston Globe - "For example, in the quest to find
vaccines for hepatitis A and B — which can be fatal or lead to chronic
liver disease and cirrhosis — both the viruses and the experimental
vaccines were injected into “mentally disabled’’ children at the
Willowbrook State School in Staten Island during the 1950s, all of whom
lacked the ability to give informed consent or assent to participate.
Another example provided is the response of the authorities to reports
of cases of paralytic polio that occurred in some people following
their inoculation with the polio vaccine in 1955, which was being given
to prevent this. While the cases were ultimately traced back to a
faulty batch made by one manufacturer, [Alexander] Langmuir suppressed
this information, fearing lawsuits and a public backlash against a mass
vaccination campaign that was meeting severe resistance from various
groups, including the American Medical Association, which viewed it as
socialized medicine."
* ►May 3, 2010 - HPV
vaccine being offered in schools
- Fond du Lac Reporter - "Julie Roloff, a parent of a Lakeshore
Elementary School student, said she has concerns about the safety of
the vaccine, including an ingredient that is known to cause
infertility. Roloff opted not to give her child the vaccine. 'I think
95 percent of the people have no idea what is in Gardasil or what the
potential side effects are,' she said."
