The Blood Transfusion Board meets this morning to discuss the terms of reference into the Inquiry as to why donors who contracted Hepatitis C were not immediately informed.

 

The investigation was set up amid fears of fresh legal action against the state over its handling of the blood scandals.

 

One donor, who gave evidence to the Finlay Tribunal, is to institute proceedings against the State and BTSB for its failure to inform them of the positive result.

 

It is believed there are at least 27 other donors who had a similar experience.

 

The latest blood inquiry was launched against a background of renewed fears of fresh legal action over the State's handling of the blood scandals.

 

The BTSB only introduced screening for Hepatitis C antibodies in 1991, therefore it is expected the Inquiry will examine exactly how donors were informed of their test results for the past 11 years.

 

The groups representing the infected, Positive Action and Transfusion Positive, have agreed the terms of reference but it is understood the IBTS has not yet agreed to them.
