“Say ‘Aaah’: Travelers Warned of Exotic Illness”

Los Angeles Times (www.latimes.com) (07/09/01) P. S2; Allen, Jane E.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working on a vaccine to protect people from leptospirosis, an illness caused by bacterium spreading from animals urinating in streams of overflowing sewer systems.  The CDC reports that athletes who went to Borneo last summer contracted leptospirosis, as did travelers who went white water rafting on flooded rivers in Costa Rica.  The findings are reported in the July 2001 Annals of Emergency Medicine.
