“Acambis Lands US Contract to Supply Smallpox Vaccine”

Financial Times (www.ft.com) (05/09/03) P. 24; Brun-Rovet, Marianne

British biotechnology firm Acambis enjoyed higher first-quarter sales and profits, thanks to greater U.S. demand and new government contracts for Acambis' smallpox vaccine--contracts worth 500 million pounds.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention originally wanted Acambis to provide 54 million doses of its ACAM1000 vaccine, but then switched to the ACAM2000 vaccine instead, with Acambis providing long-term production capability and 209 million doses in all.  Acambis CEO John Brown also noted that the company has a 5.89 million pound deal with the U.S. government to provide an attenuated smallpox vaccine for those with weakened immune systems.
