52 Aussies refused vaccine
06may03
A TOTAL of 52 Australian service personnel were flown
home from deployment in the Persian Gulf for refusing anthrax vaccinations, the
Government has revealed.
Neither Defence Minister Robert Hill nor the Australian Defence Force would say
whether the 52 were all sailors or included soldiers and RAAF personnel.
The revelation came today in answer to a question put on notice by the Opposition in the Federal Parliament.
The issue became public in February when several sailors were flown off the HMAS Kanimbla after they discovered en route to the Gulf they had to be inoculated against the deadly disease.
The Government also revealed it had spent $1.07 million on anthrax vaccines in the build-up to war.
Australia had initially bought a United Kingdom vaccine at $970 for a full
course treatment then turned to an American brand at $186 when it became
available.
