FORMER Zambia soccer squad captain Kalusha Bwalya and two other Zambian sports personalities last week attended a United Nations sponsored athletics training forum in America.
Other Zambians, who are among 30 other international sports stars, are squash queen Victoria Chishimba and swimming sensation Ellen Hight.
According to a statement from Mathias Daka, charge d'affaires at the Zambia's Permanent Mission to the UN, the two-day event which was held in New York, also chose Kalusha as the principle athlete ambassador for Zambia's nationwide measles campaign which runs from June 7 to 13, 2003.
The former Zambian skipper's specific role in the measles campaign is yet to be determined, but small postcards bearing his image and conveying key health messages are to be distributed in Chienge, Kafue, Kabwe and Mufulira to publicise the campaign.
The first of its kind, the Right-To-Play forum was held under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.
Right-To-Play is a humanitarian, non-governmental organisation committed to improving the lives of the most disadvantaged children and communities through sports for development.
The organisation which is based in Toronto, Canada, sends teams of volunteer coaches into communities to ease the implementation of its sports and play programme dubbed Sports Works.
