Twenty-nine people have been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to have monkeypox infections. Fourteen of the cases are in Wisconsin, with the rest in Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri. The infection, which has not previously been seen in the Western Hemisphere, was caused by exposure to wild or exotic mammals, such as prairie dogs. The vaccine against smallpox--a relative to monkeypox--is 85 percent effective against monkeypox, and already 24 adults and two children have been given the vaccine.
