* ►February 27, 2010 - Making sure pills go down, and money flows - The Sydney Morning Herald - "While the PBS scheme is overseen by an independent gate keeper, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), strong lobbying by the huge GlaxoSmithKline and home-grown drug manufacturer CSL, particularly during the later years of the Howard Government, succeeded in securing listings on the PBS for drugs that had earlier been rejected. CSL's anti-cervical cancer drug Gardasil was one case in point. John Howard promised the drug would make it on to the PBS despite its application being rejected by PBAC some months earlier. GSK's version of the drug was also knocked back by PBAC but the Howard government eventually approved it for a nationwide vaccination program. ..."More than any other industry, drug companies take advantage of a revolving door between the industry and politicians and their staff. A search of where former political staffers go reveals a disproportionate number move to the lucrative health sector."

* ►February 25, 2010 - Lack of Immunization Data for Home-Schooled Children (requires registration) - The Immunization Status of Home-Schooled Children in America - Journal of Pediatric Health Care via Medscape - "In view of the success of the school-entry immunization requirements, it is difficult to explain why no similar regulation is in place to monitor the immunization status of the ever-growing home-schooled population. To document the lack of standardization in what information is collected about home-schooled children and whether they are properly immunized, the authors explored the varying state regulations on childhood immunization. Specifics are provided about what some states do and do not require. What emerges is that no one really knows whether the nearly 2 million home-schooled children are adequately immunized. Every year more families participate in home schooling. Pediatric and family nurse practitioners in the primary care setting will need to play an aggressive role in trying to educate parents and protect the health of these children, as well as the public's health."
