Common
questions in my practice - North Island Midweek via BCLocalNews.com
- "I have not immunized my children against the mumps. What should I do
now that there is an outbreak in our area? Dr. P: First of all, I like
to remind you that receiving a vaccination for the mumps does not infer
life long immunity and 50 per cent or more of children go on to get the
mumps later in their teens or twenties. Enhancing the immune system
allows the body to kill off these viruses before they can cause any
severe health problems. The nutrients to consider include: essential
fats in the form of cod liver oil (which not only has loads of immune
protective Vitamin D but a little Vitamin A), vitamin A, vitamin C,
magnesium, iron (if iron deficient), zinc (do the zinc taste to
determine if deficient) and probiotics. Eating a healthy diet with
minimal junk food and sweets and taking a greens drink daily (because
most kids don’t eat enough vegetables) is another good way to boost the
immune system. In the 'good old days' children (myself included) got
the measles and mumps when they were 5 or 6 years old and then the
child was immune for life. Getting either of these illnesses in the
late teens and early twenties can be very nasty!"

- Large Injection Site
Reactions After a Second Dose of Varicella Vaccine (requires
registration) (full text) - The
Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal via Medscape - "The
mechanism of the large local reactions we observed is unclear. Although
it is possible that a bacterial cellulitis occurred after injection,
our second patient resolved quickly without antimicrobial therapy.
Dramatic presentations of local limb swelling have been described after
a 4th and 5th dose of DTaP vaccine.[9] The etiology of local reactions
to booster doses of DTaP vaccines remains unclear, but it is believed
to be related to a cumulative increased response to antigens contained
in the vaccine. Unlike reports of limb swelling after DTaP, our cases
appeared to have more signs of inflammation. It is possible in the
cases we observed that in addition to prior exposure to attenuated
varicella virus, the children had also been boosted by exposure to
wild-type varicella, thereby increasing their cumulative exposure to
varicella antigens. Alternately, the reactions we observed might be
explained by a repeat exposure to excipients contained in the vaccine
such as hydrolyzed gelatin, neomycin, or fetal bovine serum."

in eight countries across the world through his website, but it was in
South Africa - where he gave them away for free - that his activities
generated most concern. Here Chris McGreal investigates the Rath
Foundation, and the highly controversial claims of other

millions of U.S. kids skipping vaccines, are Treasure Coast students at

vaccines and doses that the government recommends to stay health before
age 6, while at the same time we've seen a tripling of the number of
children with learning disabilities, asthma, diabetes and other
conditions," Fisher said. "No one is saying this is necessarily all due
to the increase in vaccines, but vaccines shouldn't be left off the
table when no one has come up with an answer." Until a large-scale,
independent study — one so large no medical organization has agreed to
sponsor — clears vaccines of their connection with autism, Fisher and
parents like her feel they should be allowed to opt out of vaccinating
their children or changing the dosing schedules."

Consent to publication—no absolutes - journal article (BMJ) - "Two years ago four
paediatricians and an ethicist submitted to the BMJ a case study as an
ethical debate which the BMJ decided not to publish because the authors
had not obtained the consent of the patient’s parents for publication.
The authors submitted it elsewhere, and the article was published last
year."

Vaccine
taking sting out of chickenpox - Gannett News Service via Press
& Sun-Bulletin - "Doctors are learning more about the vaccine's
safety, Schaffner says. Children who received a single combined vaccine
-- protecting against chickenpox as well as measles, mumps and rubella
-- were twice as likely to develop fever and seizures, compared with
those who got the chickenpox shot separately from the
measles/mumps/rubella vaccine, the study shows. About 5 percent of
negative reactions to the vaccine have been serious, causing problems
such as pneumonia and hepatitis, the study shows."

Brucellosis
is back: What are we going to do? - The Prairie Star - "I must
briefly address Strain 19, the brucellosis vaccine used in the United
States until 1996. While there is evidence indicating Strain 19 may
provide a somewhat longer period of protection than RB51, Strain 19 had
a significant flaw: A small percentage of cattle vaccinated with Strain
19 test “positive” due to the vaccine itself. They don't have
brucellosis, but the laboratory tests can't tell the difference."
