Health risks of toxic metals during fetal life, infancy and childhood

We are exposed to methylmercury from predatory fish and inorganic mercury from dental amalgam. There is an association between prenatal exposure to methylmercury in fish-eating populations and developmental impairment in children. Therefore, pregnant women in Sweden are recommended to avoid eating predatory fish with methylmercury contamination. We have recently studied the exposure to methylmercury in pregnant women with relatively low fish consumption. As we found a wide range of MeHg levels, we are presently studying the exposure to methylmercury in women of childbearing age, who consume much fish, In addition, we are studying exposure to methylmercury and inorganic mercury (originating from dental amalgam) during fetal life and via breast milk (up to 3 months). We will also aim elucidate the possible interactions between mercury and selenium as previous studies have indicated that selenium may protect against mercury toxicity.

Another research aim is to increase the understanding of association between low dose lead exposure in children and neurotoxic effects. In collaboration with Polish researchers and specialists, we further investigate neurophysiological effects in relation lead exposure.
