U.K. Measles Threat Menaces U.S. - Key to Protection: Keeping U.S. MMR Vaccination Rate High - WebMD

MMR Research Doctor Gives Talk In Home City - The Bath Chronicle - "The Government and the World Health Organisation have rubbished his claims but Dr Wakefield is continuing to garner support from around the world for his research...Working on behalf of the charity, Visceral, in Fountain Buildings, he has pledged to continue his work until he uncovers the truth."

Environment Plays Role in Bowel Problems - Reuters Health - "Changing environmental factors seem to play a role in the development of two serious bowel problems--ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, new research suggests."

Comment: Any chance those "changing environmental factors" might include MMR?

Experts clash over danger of vaccine - Cape Times via www.iol.co.za - "Confused? If not, you probably haven't been paying attention to the debate on the safety of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine...But then came the most dramatic development. There was now proof of the danger from the MMR, said Wakefield - and it had not been made public."

UK and Italy have low MMR uptake - BMJ - "WHO vaccine experts attribute low UK levels to an "unfounded" scare that the measles mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism (8 November, p 1069), which has dented public confidence both in Britain and across Europe. But the experts say that coverage is substandard across Europe owing to a surprising lack of political will to implement an effective disease prevention programme, given the region's stated goal to eliminate measles by 2007. "

Communicating science to the public:  MMR vaccine and autism - journal article - Vaccine - "Many well-controlled studies performed subsequently found no evidence that MMR vaccine causes autism."

A further dose of MMR - Letters to the Editor - The Guardian, UK - "The MMR debate (Epidemic fear, October 31) comes down to one thing: the medical establishment's ideological belief in the MMR jab in particular, and vaccines in general...The real debate needed is over the value of vaccines in dealing with the childhood diseases."

MMR Doctor Hits Back - The Bath Chronicle - "The Bath doctor added that he was saddened by the way politics seemed to be getting in the way of scientific research into the matter."

E-News: Andrew Wakefield - Man of Courage - NVIC - BL Fisher Note: "It takes a man of great courage and integrity to stand up against overwhelming pressure from his scientific colleagues and refuse to say what is false when he knows what is true. Andrew Wakefield will not sell his soul to be protected from those government and drug company officials and doctors subservient to both government and industry who have tried to destroy him and prevent him from proving a scientific hypothesis."

Reid makes MMR plea to parents - The Scotsman

MMR scientists clash over autism link - TimesOnline  - "But speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dr Murch then appeared to soften his defence of MMR, saying it involved an "extremely small" but acceptable risk.

Comment: Acceptable to whom?

Top doctor calls for single vaccinations as worried Highland parents boycott MMR jabs -  Health board official warns of outbreak - The Sunday Herald, UK

Focus: The truth about MMR - So is the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella safe? Yes, says the Government, now backed by one of the scientists who first raised fears. No, say campaigners who link MMR with autism. Meanwhile, parents are more bewildered than ever. Paul Vallely evaluates the claims on both sides - and reveals the new evidence that is yet to come to court - The Independent, UK

Row over new 'link' between MMR jab and autism - The Guardian, UK - "The row over the MMR vaccination deepened yesterday when the doctor at the centre of the controversy published fresh evidence of a possible link between the immunisation and autism...Dr Andrew Wakefield released the paper earlier than planned following a dispute with Dr Simon Murch, a co-author of the original research that triggered a nationwide scare about the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine in 1998."

New Study Shows MMR-Autism Link  - "A new study, published in Pediatric Neurology, Vol. 28, No. 4, is expected to show that MMR and autism are linked, despite the denials of the UK Department of Health and the recent court judgement that ordered two girls to receive the controversial MMR vaccine...World-renowned autism researcher Dr. Vijendra Singh, at the Utah State University, and fellow-researcher Ryan Jensen have announced that their latest study,” Elevated Levels of Measles Antibodies in Children with Autism”, points directly to an MMR/autism link." - important article

Elevated Levels of Measles Antibodies in Children with Autism - by Vijendra K. Singh, PhD and Ryan L. Jensen, BS

MMR: more scrutiny, please - The public feels the media were too quick to report maverick claims - "The media love a maverick. That's one reason why a figure such as Dr Andrew Wakefield, who challenged established thinking over the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, has received so much coverage in the British press. But although some newspapers have presented Wakefield as a popular hero, fighting scientific officialdom on behalf of parents worried about autism, nearly half of the public believes that journalists should have subjected his claims to more scrutiny before reporting them."

Why Are Doctors Still Injecting Our Kids With Poison? - Dad’s fury over mercury jabs

Is there any research going on to find out if the MMR vaccine is linked to autism? - "The NICHD is also working with other NIH Institutes, the CDC, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other federal agencies to conduct a large, long-term study of the effects of the environment on children’s health. This study will follow 100,000 children from before birth to age 20, to track their growth and development, as well as their genetic blueprints and environmental factors that they encounter. Researchers hope to establish or rule out links between a variety of environmental events and normal and abnormal development, such as autism, asthma, and other childhood disorders that have shown dramatic increase. The study is currently under design."

Comment: Don't expect NIH to include a meaningful control group, however.

Doctor's research finds link between MMR vaccine, autism

The MMR vaccine and autism - "Claims that the MMR vaccine significantly increased the risk of developing serious neurological disorders were reported in four newspapers (1,3-5). However, the research study on which these claims were based had several flaws (6). Therefore the reliability of the reported relationship between MMR vaccination and neurological disorders such as autism should be questioned."

British public "duped" over MMR fears - "The British public has been "duped" by the media over claims that the combined mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) vaccine is unsafe, according to an analysis of news coverage of the controversy...During a period of extensive coverage in 2002, over half of the UK public believed that medical opinion was split down the middle over MMR's safety. In fact, the vast majority of doctors and researchers believe the vaccine is safe."

Concern over MMR safety study - A US study has re-ignited the debate about the safety of the MMR vaccine by suggesting it may raise the risk of neurological problems. - "Leading experts - who have repeatedly stressed the vaccine is safe - have expressed doubts about the validity of the study, claiming it is deeply flawed and that it appears in a journal not considered to be among the most prestigious in its field...But UK campaigners, who want single jabs for measles, mumps and rubella to be made widely available, say the latest research justifies their continuing belief that MMR is not safe."

MMR survey shows public doubts over safety linger - "More than half of the British public wrongly believes that medical science is split about the safety of the MMR vaccine, says a survey today...Although almost all scientific experts reject claims of a link between MMR and autism, 53 per cent of people assume that because both sides of the debate received equal media coverage, there must be equal evidence for both. Only a fifth are aware that the bulk of the evidence favours supporters of the vaccine."

Comment:  Perhaps those who are merely interested in "bulk" evidence have been convinced of MMR safety;  those, however, who are more impressed with the quality of the evidence remain more circumspect.

Experts find new study by Geier & Geier on MMR and autism to be seriously flawed

Neurodevelopmental disorders after thimerosal-containing vaccines: a brief communication. - by Geier MR, MD, PhdD and Geier DA

Mother denied choice of vaccine for baby - Mercury-free jab unavailable despite executive promise

Scientists call for single inoculation option as report links MMR to autism

MMR - risk of brain disorders? - "The MMR jab 'significantly' increases the risk of developing autism and other brain and nerve disorders, according to a study...U.S. experts say the vaccine may be a factor in up to 15 per cent of such conditions."

Drama at MMR research launch - "The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today ejected a press conference on a study that showed a link between the MMR jab and autism from its headquarters because it feared being seen as endorsing the findings...The American researchers were told to leave the RCN's head offices in central London when they arrived to set up their press conference early this morning."

Media misled the public over the MMR vaccine

MMR kids 'five times more likely to develop autism'

Link Between MMR Vaccination and Autism Subject to Recall Bias - If the results of a study are not significant, that means the results could be due to chance alone.  Thus, the  conclusion they drew here, i.e., stating that "the results of this study are consistent with the existence of parental recall bias when reporting the onset of regression in relation to the MMR immunization in children with autism.", is not justified.
