Rabies study fund gets
$35,000 donation - Portland Press Herald via MaineToday.com - "The fund is a
charitable trust founded by Kris Christine of Alna, who contends too-frequent
rabies vaccinations are exposing pets to health risks, such as cancer. The fund
helps raise money for a study to determine whether dogs could be protected with
far fewer rabies shots."

►April 14, 2008 - Update: Wyoming's Rabies Laws - Aimee's Law
►April 13, 2008 - Changes to vaccine ordinance unlikely - Right now, the city requires that rabies tags be updated every year -- which means a new shot annually even though there is a vaccination that is proven to last for three years. - Wyoming Tribune-Eagle - "Laramie County resident Karon Volk is a pet owner and supporter of the Rabies Challenge Fund, an organization that tests the duration of the rabies vaccine. She says the yearly requirement is overkill and may be dangerous to pets. The results of the studies, which won't be published for five years, have found that the currently rabies vaccine provides immunity for much longer than one year, possibly even longer than seven years, she said. The fund also has found that the vaccine can cause some adverse reactions like tumors and illness, Volk added."
►April 9, 2008 - Vets at odds over vaccinating cats for mutated virus - Daytona Beach News Journal - A Jan. 15, 2004, article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association says outbreaks of highly virulent feline calicivirus are increasingly common. Rachel Zimmer, who works as a veterinarian-technician at Spruce Creek Animal Clinic, couldn't do anything to save her ragdoll kitty, 5-year-old Montana, when the cat came down with some kind of killer virus in 2006 that Zimmer suspects was calicivirus....Zimmer isn't sure whether Montana died of viral pathogens that were brought home from Zimmer's work at the animal clinic or whether it became deadly when it mutated once it hit Montana's bloodstream. But she's pretty sure she couldn't have vaccinated against it because the vaccines can't keep up with the virus's mutations."

However, unnecessary rabies vaccinations have been documented to cause significant adverse affects to domestic animals, including autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system. Other possible effects are anaphylactic shock, aggression, seizures, epilepsy and fibrosarcoma at injection sites."

►March 23, 2008 - Vaccine overkill? - Wyoming Tribune-Eagle - "Even though city residents might have the option of getting rabies vaccines for their pets that last three years, according to city ordinance, the vaccine has to be administered every year. There are two types of vaccines available. The only difference between them is how long they’ve been proven effective, Wyoming State Veterinarian Walter Cook said."
►March 20, 2008 - 2nd Update KANSAS RABIES LAW--My Letter to Kay Johnson - Rat Terriers - "Below is a copy of the letter I faxed to Kay Johnson this morning. It appears that a vaccine revolution in Kansas has been triggered by the Wichita Eagle article http://www.kansas.com/news/story/344780.html. Dog owners are starting to organize, and Kay Johnson has received communications from as far away as India!!"
►March 18, 2008 - Are annual shots a risk for dogs? - The Wichita Eagle via www.kansas.com - "Kris Christine has been studying vaccine-related illnesses in pets and lobbying to change vaccination laws since 2004, when her Labrador, Meadow, was diagnosed with cancer at the site of his rabies vaccination. One result of her efforts is the Rabies Challenge Fund, which Christine, who lives in Maine, started with veterinarians Ronald Schultz of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and W. Jean Dodds of California. The fund is paying for tests under way at the veterinary school in Madison, Wis., which will attempt to confirm previous studies that showed the rabies vaccine confers immunity in dogs for five to seven years."
►March 14, 2008 - Onyx and Breezy Foundation Funds Follow-up Care in Revolutionary Cancer Vaccine Study - The Onyx & Breezy Foundation recently funded after-care for dogs engaged in a revolutionary research study to develop a cancer vaccine that may be given to both humans and animals when successful. The study is being conducted at The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, a small animal teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. - press release - The Onyx & Breezy Foundation via PRWeb

Prevent parvo with complete vaccination - The Coloradoan - "Parvovirus is
difficult to kill and lives in the environment all around us. Luckily, we are
able to effectively vaccinate dogs against it. So why did I get a desperate call
from a colleague at the Fort Collins Emergency Hospital this week, pleading with
me to write this column? Because in the last two weeks, they have seen more than
15 cases, all in puppies younger than 16 weeks and most of which were vaccinated
once. One vaccine dose does not produce complete immunity and sometimes two
doses don't."
►March 12, 2008 -
Cat vaccinations linked to tumors - Albany Times Union - "Now veterinarians
have changed the injection-site protocol because vaccine injections can result
in often-fatal fibrosarcoma cancer. Effective surgical removal from the shoulder
blade is impossible. Injections are given low down on one of the cat's legs, so
if cancer were to develop at the injection site, the cat has a better chance of
survival when the leg is amputated."

Eye
Disease In Dogs Newly Identified - Iowa State University via ScienceDaily -
"Both diseases occur when the dog produces auto antibodies that attack the
retinal cells. The antibodies mistake retinal cells for cancerous tumors or
tissues that need to be destroyed. In the process of attacking the retinal
cells, the auto antibodies cause the retinal cells to lose function and the dog
to lose some or all of its vision."
►March 2, 2008 - KANSAS RABIES LAW--Action Alert!! - Corgi Forums - "If you are a Kansas dog owner would like to see Kansas adopt the national standard of a triennial rabies vaccination protocol for dogs, now is the time to act."
►February 21, 2008 - Bromide or phenobarbital may help dog's seizures - Houston Chronicle - "Vaccinations and the kinds of drugs you use are giving your dog can all play a role in canine epilepsy. So, too, can heredity and adverse reaction to certain food ingredients, notably wheat. After he is taken off all medications, low-dose medication with potassium bromide or phenobarbital may be called for if the seizures become more frequent. Some dogs are extremely sensitive to certain drugs and food ingredients, and thorough detective work is called for. Transitioning your dog to a natural diet may prove beneficial, as other readers have confirmed."

Canine Vaccinations: A Shot in the Bark - Petside - "So much evidence was
accumulated that the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) changed the
vaccination guidelines in 2003, modifying them in 2006. The AAHA stressed that
vaccination is not as harmless a procedure as once thought, and even though
adverse reactions are rare, it’s foolish to give unnecessary vaccinations. Nor
are vaccinations a 'one shot fits all' situation. The right vaccinations for
your dog depend on its age, breed, health status, environment, life style and
where your pet lives or travels."
►January 12, 2008 - Confusion over new pet vaccinations (includes video) - www.wfaa.com - "'Some veterinarians take the position that it's not gonna hurt the dog to give these extra vaccinations, and let's err on the side of precaution... but twice as much isn't necessarily as good,' said Don Praeger from the Arlington Humane Society. 'There are some studies that indicate that it can cause an increase in sarcomas which are cancerous tumors,' he added."
►January 11, 2008 - Dog vaccination-allergic reaction link studied - Pugs, dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Boston terriers and miniature pinschers sought for research. - The Orange County Register - "Researchers are trying to identify the causes of allergic reactions in dogs receiving vaccinations. If you have a dachshund, pug, Chihuahua, Boston terrier or miniature pinscher – all breeds at high risk for such reactions – you can participate in the study. To do so, your vet will need to send a 4- to 5-milliliter blood sample from your dog to researchers at Purdue University in Indiana within three weeks of your dog receiving the vaccinations."

3, 2008 - Bottom Line Blurs
Veterinary Practices -
www.newstarget.com - "Let's start with vaccinations. The standard operating
procedure is for animals to receive a multitude of vaccinations on a regular
schedule. Most animal guardians don't question the vaccination schedule. If the
vet says it's needed, then it must be. For those who do question it, they are
met with hostility or condescension or frightened with the horrors of what will
happen if an animal isn't vaccinated regularly. And in several cases, have been
asked to find another vet altogether."

►January 1, 2008 - Ginseng aids vaccination response in horses - Horsetalk, New Zealand - "'No adverse effects of ginseng treatment were identified by hematologic and blood biochemistry profiles. Thus, low-dose dietary supplementation with ginseng in healthy horses may be a useful adjunct to vaccination.' The researchers chose the vaccine against EHV-1 as it typically produces a poor antibody response and provides incomplete protection against infection."
►December 27, 2007 - Make efforts to be a better pet caretaker in 2008 - Newsday - "Resolve to get vaccine-savvy. Don't wait until a health crisis hits before you modernize your attitude about vaccinations. The veterinary profession has rapidly changed its more-is-more attitude toward vaccines, to the point that "annual shots" are as archaic a concept as whalebone corsets. For many vaccines, every three years is becoming a minimum interval."
►December 18, 2007 - Rabies draft ordinance forwarded - The Rolla Daily News - "The Commission forwarded a rough draft of a new ordinance on Tuesday to the Prosecuting Attorney which is aimed at strengthening the Phelps County Health Department's power to enforce mandatory testing or quarantining of animals that have bitten people or other animals to determine if they have rabies."
►December 11, 2007 - The beastly side of pets: Disease - Providence Journal
►Science of Vaccine Damage - www.dogsadversereactions.com - "Merck warns in its Manual that patients with, or from families with, B and/or T cell immunodeficiencies should not receive live-virus vaccines due to the risk of severe or fatal infection. Elsewhere, it lists features of B and T cell immunodeficiencies as food allergies, inhalant allergies, eczema, dermatitis, neurological deterioration and heart disease. To translate, people with these conditions can die if they receive live-virus vaccines. Their immune systems are simply not competent enough to guarantee a healthy reaction to the viral assault from modified live-virus vaccines. Modified live-virus (MLV) vaccines replicate in the patient until an immune response is provoked. If a defence isn't stimulated, then the vaccine continues to replicate until it gives the patient the very disease it was intending to prevent."

Maine
trust helps to fund rabies study - Morning Sentinel via MaineToday.com -
"The research is being funded by The Rabies Challenge Fund, a charitable trust
founded by Kris Christine of Alna, who became concerned about rabies shots after
her yellow Labrador, Meadow, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago.
Christine said the mast cell cancer started at the spot where her dog got his
rabies shot. She believes it was the cause. The trust has raised $210,000, of
which $177,000 will fund the first year of the study, according to Christine.
Then, she said, $150,000 must be raised each year for the study, which will run
for five to seven years."

absence of threats from without, Americans should continue to vaccinate dogs for
rabies, reminds Jean Dodds of Santa Monica, Calif., a veterinary immunologist,
vocal critic of overvaccination and co-founder of the Rabies Challenge Fund. The
purpose of the fund is to raise money for clinical trials to prove that the
rabies vaccine imparts immunity for as long as five to seven years - not the
three years currently acknowledged by the USDA. But that's a far cry from saying
vaccination is no longer necessary, Dodds stresses."

Owners Say "Yes" to Exempt Dogs and Cats from Rabies Vaccinations - Texas
pet owners demand change in rabies laws to exempt sick and senior pets from
compulsory rabies vaccinations when the Department of Health Services Council
meets on August 6 2007. - press release - Dr. Bob Rogers, DVM via PRWeb via
eMediawire - "'There is a temporal association between adverse reactions like
Vaccine Associated Sarcoma in cats and Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia and
Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia in dogs and cats,' states Dr. Rogers in a
letter to TDHS requesting an exemption for pets with a history of reactions or
existing health issues. 'They can be deadly.' But injection site tumors and
IMHA are the tip of the iceberg according to veterinarians, veterinary medicine
associations, research scientists and pet owners who want legal reform.
Veterinarians in the USA and worldwide are attributing an epidemic of common
problems that they relate directly to vaccines. These include ear or skin
conditions, such as chronic discharges and itching and behavior problems such as
fearfulness or aggression. Pet owners often report that these symptoms begin
shortly after vaccination and are exacerbated with every re-vaccination."

29, 2007 - Dogs may be getting
too many vaccines, vet specialist says - Cox News Service via Arizona Daily
Star - "Despite warnings that America's dogs are being vaccinated too much and
too often, most veterinarians continue the practice as a way to keep clients
coming in the door, according to a leading animal immunologist. Vaccines for
rabies and three other major canine diseases — distemper, canine adenovirus-2
and canine parvovirus — should be given no more often than once every three
years, said Ronald Schultz, a veterinary immunologist at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison....'They give a lot of these vaccinations in 'mambocombo'
injections,' he said. 'Imagine what an assault it is to an animal's immune
system to have 12 or 13 vaccines injected at once.'"

Immunizations aren't appropriate for all cats - Tri-Valley Herald -
"Generally, for indoor cats, I no longer recommend immunization against the
feline leukemia virus or rabies. For cats that go outdoors, we now immunize with
an non-adjuvanted rabies vaccine formulated to reduce the risk of developing
vaccine-associated sarcomas. An adjuvant is an additive that increases the
body's immune response to an immunization. Adjuvanted vaccines induce immunity
that lasts longer, but can be irritating to the tissues under the skin. This
irritation is believed to contribute to the development of vaccine-associated
sarcomas. Immunizations are now given in different locations to further reduce
the amount of subcutaneous irritation at any one location as a result of
immunization."

possible Bunny had a vaccine-associated sarcoma. A new study shows these
sarcomas to be all but eradicated since new vaccines were introduced in 2002.
However, cats vaccinated before this date are still at risk of developing these
notoriously aggressive tumors."

Funds raised for rabies study - Bangor Daily News - "Inspired by the love
she has for her ill dog, a stay-at-home mother from rural Maine has raised
enough funds to bankroll a major scientific study on how long rabies vaccines
remain effective. 'These will be the first long-term challenge studies on the
canine rabies vaccine to be published in the United States,' Kris Christine said
this week....Christine believes that her beloved dog, a yellow Labrador
retriever named Meadow, contracted cancer at the points on its body where rabies
vaccines were injected. Even after four major surgeries, this may be Meadow’s
last summer. But Christine says her determination to make Meadow’s suffering
count for something could result in saving the lives of thousands of dogs
throughout the country....More information and regular updates on The Rabies
