Comment: For a perspective on rubella vaccine dangers, go to Scandals: Is Rubella Vaccination Playing A Role In The Rise In Autism?
►March 7, 2004 - Sick children untreated due to MMR fears - Families seek care in US as UK doctors dismiss complaints to avoid triple jab controversy - Sunday Herald, UK - "AUTISTIC children in Britain are being forced to fly to the US for treatment because of the ongoing political controversy surrounding the MMR jab...Up to 10 British children, including a seven-year-old from Edinburgh, have been treated at a specialist centre in Florida for painful bowel diseases after the NHS refused to recognise their symptoms...An investigation by the Sunday Herald has revealed that despite medical evidence of a link between the disorder and autism, NHS doctors are ignoring or dismissing the connection because they fear becoming embroiled in the triple jab controversy. Instead of acknowledging a previously unknown condition that inflames the children’s bowels, they say the painful symptoms are caused by constipation."
►March 7, 2004 - Dangerous disease - opinion - Scotland on Sunday - "Up to now, parents who fundamentally oppose the MMR have either had to source and pay for single injections - at up to £350 per course - or gamble that if they leave their children unprotected they will not catch one of the diseases. The former option is becoming increasingly rare, with sources of single inoculations drying up - at the moment the mumps vaccine is almost impossible to obtain. A mass order for single vaccines from the NHS would soon have manufacturers vying to meet the demand, of course, and it looks increasingly sensible to offer parents that alternative, so long as they are willing to pay for a service which is above and beyond basic need. Some will see this as caving in to ill-informed prejudice but this would be a small price to pay to protect all our children from disease."

►March 1, 2004 - MMR uptake causes worry - www.edp24.co.uk
►February 29, 2004 - Health bosses deny MMR deception - Health bosses have denied university students' claims that they were tricked into having the MMR vaccine without their knowledge. - BBC - "A mass inoculation programme against mumps took place at the University of Kent at Canterbury earlier this month after six students caught the disease...Now some students have told a national newspaper they were not told they were being given the MMR vaccine."
►March 1, 2004 - Misreporting Measles Research - National Electronic Library for Health (archive) - www.nelh.nhs.uk - "The research study found that a higher proportion of children with developmental disorder and new variant inflammatory bowel disease had measles virus in their gut tissue than healthy children."
Comment: This analysis tries to make it appear as if there is no evidence linking MMR vaccine to the measles virus in these children or good reason to believe they might be connected. As for research, there is research evidence linking the two. As for good reason, these children were vaccinated and had never had the measles. So the presence of measles virus in their gut probably either means that a) it is measles vaccine virus or b) vaccinated children who get the measles can suffer gastrointestinal problems which may or may not be related to autism.

►February 24, 2004 - Good Health: Nigerian scientists worry over measles vaccine - www.vanguardngr.com - "The thought of measles often brings to mind the red, blotchy skin rash that accompanies this common disorder. But the rash is just an outward sign of the more significant changes happening inside the body — especially within the respiratory system. Primarily, measles is a respiratory infection caused by a highly contagious virus that tends to be serious and even fatal for small children...However, a group of Nigerian scientists have been worried that despite availability of a certified measles vaccine that has been in use for several decades, the infection has remained a significant problem in childhood. Their agitation may well change the course of measles vaccination in the near future."

Society for Infectious Diseases via ProMED Mail
►February 23, 2004 -
Mumps Outbreak Not Related to Decline in MMMR Uptake - International Society
for Infectious Diseases via ProMED Mail - "In fact this outbreak and similar
ones like it elsewhere in the UK are not a result of recent falls in MMR uptake
-- they are affecting the wrong age group for that -- but are as a result of
previous vaccination policy."

►2004 - Jab alert
as city's mumps cases soar - Glasgow is at the centre of an alarming rise in
mumps among teenagers. - Evening Times
►February 19, 2004 -
New jags call in mumps outbreak - Daily Record, UK - "CASES of mumps are
soaring in Scotland, it was revealed yesterday...Since December, 49 cases have
been confirmed, compared with only 26 for the whole of last year."
►February 18, 2004 - Meeting Addresses Childhood Killer: Measles - American Red Cross - "Among the attendees was Dr. Samuel Katz, inventor of the measles vaccine...Each year, a disease barely remembered by most Americans kills nearly one million children, a half million of those in Africa alone."
Comment: Measles in developing nations is deadly. Historically, it has not been deadly in developed ones. The fact that measles is deadly in developing nations is not a reason to hype the deadliness of measles in developed nations. ►February 16, 2004 - Doc's appeal fails - Harrow Times - "DR David Pugh has lost his bid to be reinstated by the General Medical Council, despite evidence which he claimed proved his controversial single vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella were safe...He was banned from practising in October after allegations by Hertsmere Primary Care Trust that 40,000 children, many from Harrow, treated at his private clinic in Elstree were at greater risk of catching the diseases because doctors did not follow manufacturers' guidelines for administering the jabs.

►February 13, 2004 - MMR rebels run clinics - Evening Mail via http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk - "Parents will be offered a chance to protect their children with individual measles and mumps jabs this weekend...A private clinic is coming to the West Midlands for parents concerned over the safety of the triple MMR jab and its links to autism and bowel disease."►February 2004 - The Child With Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: Is Pharmacotherapy or Watchful Waiting the Best Initial Management?: A Panel Discussion From the 2002 Meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology - journal article (Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

►February 6, 2004 - Parents delay MMR jab decision - www.eveningnews24.co.uk - "And it is feared delaying the jab could put children at far greater risk of contracting the potentially lethal conditions."
Comment: This is scare-mongering. These conditions (measles, mumps and rubella) are rarely lethal in healthy children in developed nations. (Rubella is often so benign you don't even know you had it, although it can be serious for a fetus if the mother contracts it during a critical period in pregnancy.) ►January 29, 2004 - Measles: Deadly as ever - www.sunstar.com.ph - "In healthy, well-nourished children, measles is rarely serious. However, complicating bacterial infections occur fairly often, and people with measles are especially susceptible to infection with streptococci bacteria."

►January 27, 2004 - More children given MMR vaccine - The number of children having the MMR jab has increased for the first time in over a year, statistics have shown. - BBC
►January 28, 2004 - Rise in mumps cases prompts call to use triple MMR vaccine - The Herald, UK
Comment: If they would have allowed single vaccines, maybe this wouldn't have happened. On the other hand, mumps was always considered a relatively benign disease before there was a vaccine to prevent it.
►January 26, 2004 - More and More Autism Cases, Yet Causes Are Much Debated (requires registration or subscription) - The New York Times - "Over the years, a host of other environmental factors have also been nominated as culprits, including a variety of infections, like German measles in pregnant mothers; the sedative drug thalidomide; the drug Pitocin, used to induce labor; synthetic compounds like plastics and PCB's; and food additives."
Comment: Perhaps it is not just rubella (or German measles), but the rubella vaccine, which can cause autism. For more on this go to Scandals: Is Rubella Vaccination Playing A Role In The Rise In Autism?

►January 15, 2004 - Doctors giving MMR 'by stealth' - www.femail.co.uk - "Family doctors have been accused of administering the MMR jab by stealth to children coming into their surgeries to receive other vaccinations...At least 50 horrified parents have complained that their GPs have 'mistakenly' given their children the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, it has emerged."
January 5-11, 2004
►January, 2004 - Should physics be more elitist? - Is it best to aim school physics teaching at a talented minority of specialists? Or should it be made more accessible so that people can appreciate the role of physics in society? Opening this special section on education, Mark Ellse argues that physics is an elite activity that only a few will ever appreciate, while Jonathan Osborne believes that we should communicate the excitement of physics to all - http://physicsweb.org - "Most of what the public needs to know not only requires some technical knowledge of science, but also an understanding of how scientific knowledge is achieved, how it is validated and what the associated risks are. Just look at the absurd actions of many parents who refuse to allow their children to be given a single vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) - preferring that the vaccinations should instead be given separately. In the process, these parents are putting their children at the increased risk of infection from measles or rubella."
►January 7, 2004 - Vaccines: New Campaigns Against Scepticism, Says Sirchia - "'We must launch new vaccine campaigns, despite the recent scepticisms' said today health minister Girolamo Sirchia, in Genoa to attend the 'Children and the Mediterranean conference. 'The fact that a measles epidemic has killed three people in Campania and that flu kills thousands of people each year is a crime, just as ignoring that a vaccine exists is. There is an anti-scientific behaviour which establishes that the vaccine causes the disease. We have gone back to step 1, when Jenner and Pasteur were considered plague-spreaders'. According to the minister, the fear of vaccines is due to a lack of information: 'the more scientific development advances, the more anti-scientific movements come about. Today's vaccines are completely safe - concluded Sirchia - even the one against smallpox. There are no risks whatsoever'.
Comment: If it's not obvious by now that politics and medicine shouldn't mix, I don't know when it will be. "NO RISKS WHATSOEVER"? And why are these politicians (like Blair earlier today) suddenly speaking out, and so confidently and vociferously? What's up or about to be?
December 29, 2003 - January 4, 2004
►January 3, 2004 - Leading With The Jab To Beat Killers - This Is Staffordshire - "North Staffordshire babies receive the most protection in Britain against three potential killer diseases. The area has come top of a national league table recording the proportion of each district's population volunteering their infants to have the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine."
Comment: This is simply nothing
less than fear mongering. Neither the mumps nor rubella have ever been
considered "killers", although rubella can sometimes be quite serious for a
fetus. And the measles is generally not considered serious in the developed
world. For Scandals columns on the
