"UN Seeking Funds for Rwandan Meningitis Vaccination Drive" Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (09/10/02)
A $2 million appeal to back a massive vaccination campaign against meningitis has been launched by UNICEF, the Rwandan Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and Medicins sans Frontieres. Outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis in Rwanda have taken the lives of 83 people and sickened 683 others, according to a UNICEF spokesperson, who noted that at least 2 million more people are at risk. UNICEF has already provided over 600,000 vaccine doses, and 250,000 more were delivered to the capital, Kigali, earlier this week.
