UK vaccine calls

All children should be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease given the huge rise in the use of communal day care centres, UK campaigners said today.

Pneumococcal infection can lead to a fatal form of meningitis and results in 50 infants and children dying each year.

Many more are left with permanent disabilities, such as brain damage and deafness.

The Raising Awareness of Paediatric Pneumococcal Infection and Disease (RAPPID) campaign is calling for youngsters to routinely be given a vaccination to protect them from the bug.

RAPPID says there has been a 300% increase in the number of British children under five attending day care where it is inevitable they are at greater risk of catching infections.

It wants the UK Government to follow the French and American example where children in day care are vaccinated against pneumococcal disease.

Brent Taylor, professor of Community Child Health at the Royal and Free University College Medical School in London, is a member of the RAPPID steering committee.

He said: ``It is an inevitable fact of life that children in nurseries and playgroups are at greater risk of catching infections.

``But there is now a vaccine that can help to protect against one of the most serious bacterial ones - pneumococcal infection - responsible for one of the most deadly forms of meningitis.``

Julia Goodwin, RAPPID member and editor of Prima Baby magazine, said UK vaccination policy should catch up with the fact that childcare has become an essential part of everyday life.

She said British children should get the vaccination just like youngsters in France and the US.

``Our government should make its introduction a priority,`` she said.

Currently in Britain, doctors are advised to immunise certain ``at risk`` children against pneumococcal disease but is still considering whether to introduce it as a routine vaccination for all children aged between two months and two years.
