"State Nets Cash in Virus Fight"

New Orleans Times-Picayune (www.timespicayune.com) (09/14/02) P. 5; Walsh, Bill

The Louisiana health department will receive $1.3 million of the $6.3 million in health department grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to fight the West Nile virus, which has infected 238 people and caused 11 deaths in the state since January.  The state also received $3.7 million from the CDC last month.  Meanwhile, Rep. David Vitter (R-La.) is calling for $55 million in direct aid to states in order to treat infected people and to research a West Nile virus vaccine.  A letter Vitter sent to Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Ohio), head of the subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, requests that an additional $40 million be allocated for the CDC's West Nile virus program and that $15 million in research grants be directed to the National Institutes of Health.
