"Nepal Reports Rising Encephalitis Death Toll"

BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (09/15/02); Khanal, Gopal

In the last two months, Japanese encephalitis has killed about 50 people in Terai, Nepal, according to Nepalese health officials. Deaths from the disease are up by 20 percent this year after rising 13 percent last year, said Bheri Zonal Hospital chief Durga Prasad Pradhan.  Doctors in Nepal assert that although a vaccine against the disease is currently available, most infected patients were never vaccinated.
