"Mumbai May Miss 2005 Polio Deadline"

Economic Times of India (www.economictimes.com) (09/15/02)

Mumbai's polio campaign may not meet the 2005 deadline of officially eradicating the disease from the city because of extensive migration from Uttar Pradesh, where numerous pockets of disease continue to obstruct the success of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).  A region can only be declared polio-free after no cases of polio are reported there for three consecutive years.  In 2001, a single case of polio forced the corporation to intensify its battle against the disease; however, three cases of the disease have already been detected in children this year, frustrating the BMC's goal of having the disease declared eradicated from Mumbai by 2005.
