The Hepatitis Foundation is warning that hepatitis C has the potential to become one of the biggest burdens on New Zealand's health system.

It is estimated about 25,000 people have the virus, with that figure rising to more than 37,000 within the next decade.

The virus can lead to years of ill health and a heightened risk of liver disease.

John Hornell from the foundation says it can take years for symptoms to appear, so people may be totally unaware they have the virus.

He says there are significant implications for the health system when those people are eventually diagnosed.

He says the best ways of avoiding catching hepatitis C include not sharing needles and using protection during sex.
