"HIV Vaccine Optimism in Barcelona"

LANCET Infectious Diseases (infection.thelancet.com) (09/02) Vol. 2, No. 9,; Spencer, Stuart

A feeling that the development of effective therapeutic HIV vaccines is not far off permeated the recent AIDS conference in Barcelona, Spain.  One research team indicated that it developed a vaccine that both lowered viral load and stimulated a T-helper immune response that recognized HIV.  One vaccine that targets gp120 is being tested in two Phase III trials.  The use of HIV genes in naked DNA together with modified genes was presented at the conference as a promising adjuvant.  The main downfall of the vaccine is that the results are variable.  Any vaccine with a lower confidence limit for effectiveness of over 30 percent will be considered by the FDA.
