INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Ghana; Malaria Vaccine Soon"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (09/19/02); Mail, Accra
Headway is being made in the development of a multi-molecular vaccine to fight malaria at every stage of its development, according to Professor Isabella Quakyi, chief of Immunology and Micro-Biology Department of the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana. In a speech at the second annual research meeting of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Quakyi said efforts to develop the multi-molecular vaccine had been stymied due to the parasite's ability to adapt to its environment--until now. The professor added that latest research has also shown a notable difference between African parasites and Asian parasites. In light of these differences, Quakyi said more needed to be done by the government in its commitment to research and "the training of more local scientists to study the environment and develop vaccines to combat local parasites."
