"Flirting With a Vaccine Disaster"

Sunday Tasmanian (09/29/02); Papadakis, Mary

Many Australian parents are putting their children at risk from killer diseases, say medical experts, because they refuse to accept traditional vaccines, relying instead on homeopathic remedies.  According to Dr. Rosemary Lester, department of Human Services prevention and perinatal health manager, "There's no scientific evidence that these so-called homeopathic vaccines work at all."  Australasian College of Hahnemannian Homeopathy director Isaac Golden asserts that the children who receive the homeopathic products are not at risk, although he notes that homeopaths provide "preventative remedies," not vaccines. Recently, the Therapeutic Goods Administration went after a so-called meningococcal "vaccine," and a spokesman for the Australian Medical Association stated that homeopathic vaccine alternatives should not be used.
