Dynavax initiates Phase II Hepatitis B study

Berkeley's Dynavax Technologies Corp., a biopharmaceutical company, has initiated a Phase II study for a potential Hepatitis B vaccine.

The study will evaluate whether its immunostimulatory DNA sequence vaccine provides effective protection after one injection. The study will compare the protective immune response of patients after immunization with either Engerix-B HBV vaccine, a commercially available Hepatitis B vaccine, or recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen co-administered with Dynavax's immunostimulatory DNA sequences.

"Our ISS vaccine candidate has the potential to be a single-injection product that provides protection against HBV shortly after immunization," Dino Dina, president and chief executive officer of Dynavax, said in a prepared statement. "Previous clinical testing suggests its potential to address major limitations with current HBV vaccines – the number of immunizations required, poor patient compliance in completing the regimen, and percentage of non-responders."
