"Cabinet Approves Polio Eradication Strategy for 2002"
Press Trust of India (www.ptinews.com) (08/31/02)
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in India, chaired by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, approved over the weekend a plan to eradicate polio for 2002-2003. The plan includes house-to-house vaccination of children against polio, two National Immunization Days, and two sub-national immunization days. The number of polio cases in India has dropped from 1,934 cases in 1998 to just 173 cases so far this year. Those cases occurred in just eight states, which is an improvement from last year, when polio was recorded in 12 states.
