U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"As Population Shifts, Health Clinic Adapts"
Boston Globe (www.boston.com/globe) (09/01/02) P. 4; Schworm, Peter
In Marlborough, Mass., where an estimated one in five residents is originally from Portugal or Brazil, four immunization clinics held recently by the health board enabled newly immigrated parents to vaccinate their children before the first day of school. Vaccines given at the clinics, which offered health forms in Portuguese as well as translators, are free of charge and donated by the state. Public health nurse Nancy Cleary notes that almost all of the Brazilian children need updated vaccinations, as the requirements for childhood shots are different in the United States than in Brazil. Cleary said the number of childhood shots she has given has soared from under 100 in 1989 to over 800 in 2001, in large part because of new arrivals to the area.
