INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Acambis Reports Smallpox Vaccine Trial Results"
Dow Jones Newswire Online (www.djnewswires.com) (09/03/02); Vallejo, Maria P.
Encouraging news regarding Phase I trials of Acambis PLC's new smallpox vaccine ACAM1000 and the older Dryvax vaccine came as subjects receiving the ACAM1000 injection responded with full immunity within 10 days, as presented with a pock-mark on the skin, while 97 percent of the Dryvax subjects responded in kind. Though no serious or unanticipated side affects were reported in individuals taking the ACAM1000 vaccine, a second trial is still underway to further test the vaccine's safety and level of immunity. The Department of Health and Human Services has been pressing for manufacturers to develop a new smallpox vaccine since the terrorist attacks last year--challenging each interested firm to demonstrate their capability of developing, manufacturing and delivering up to 250 million doses within a one-year period.
