Kabul -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai will launch the latest round of a mass anti-polio campaign which will see some six million children immunized against the disease this week, the United Nations said Sunday, AFP reported.

The three-day campaign, which is being jointly conducted by the Afghan Health Ministry, the World Health Organization and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), will begin on Tuesday, UNICEF Spokesman Chulho Hyun told reporters.

An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five will be targeted in the third of four mass programs. The final round will be held late next month.

"Teams of vaccinators will go from village to village, house to house, to ensure that all children in that age bracket are immunized," Hyun said.

Incidents of polio have fallen sharply in Afghanistan recently.

There have been just four reported cases so far this year, compared to 27 two years ago.

Karzai will administer the first drops of the oral vaccine on Monday during half-time at a football match organized to mark the campaign.
