The Daily Telegraph (June 6th) reports that the Australian government is considering adding vaccines for chickenpox, meningococcal disease and pneumococcal disease to the standard childhood schedule. They are also looking at switching from the oral polio vaccine to the injectable vaccine. Also under consideration is the recommendation that adults be encouraged to have a booster vaccination against whooping cough as at least half of all reporting cases of whooping cough occur in adults. The Government is also looking at combining many of the vaccines into a single shot so as to reduce the number of injections given at each vaccination encounter. Concerns raised in the UK regarding MMR and the risk of autism have been dismissed by Australian health authorities. Telegraph story Meanwhile the Sunday Express (UK) reports on a 2000 study by Andrew Wakefield which reveals that autistic children with bowel disease carry residues of the measles virus in their blood unlike ''other'' children. The residues are ''consistent'' with the vaccine. Express story Article abstract
