"WHO Declares Sudan Polio-Free"
PANA Wire Service (allafrica.com) (10/27/02)
Salah Haithami, the World Health Organization's (WHO's) representative in Sudan, declared the region officially free from polio on Sunday, noting that no cases of polio have been recorded in the country this year, with the number of cases declining steadily since 1993, when 250 cases were reported. Just one case of polio was recorded in Sudan last year. Haithami said the WHO has allocated $1 million for two new rounds of polio immunization this month and again in December and that UNICEF has earmarked $2.5 million to support the program.
