"U.N. Races to Save Afghan Children From Measles"
Reuters (www.reuters.com) (10/18/02)
UNICEF has announced plans to vaccinate another 1.75 million children in Afghanistan against measles. Over 8 million Afghan children have been vaccinated against the disease since January. A UNICEF spokeswoman noted that achieving its goal of giving 10 million children measles shots will help to prevent 35,000 deaths this winter. UNICEF is rushing to vaccinate the last children now, because once winter comes, many areas will not be easily reached.
