"Solomon Islands Said Tackling Immunization Despite Ethnic Strife" BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (10/02/02)

Solomon Islands national immunization coordinator Raymond Mauriasi has trained health workers and volunteers to conduct and promote childhood immunization schedules even in conflict-torn areas.  The Solomon Islands participates in an expanded program on immunization, financed by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, that works to protect children in the country against polio, tetanus, and other vaccine-preventable illnesses through immunization of all children between the ages of nine months and five years.  Mauriasi said he hopes the government can help finance the program, to keep it operational and to ensure that children in the country are protected from deadly diseases.
