"Six Million Afghan Children to Receive Polio Vaccine"
Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (10/22/02)
The Afghan government, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization are completing a joint project designed to vaccinate 6 million Afghan children against polio. UNICEF's Chulho Hyun estimates that 5.9 million children under age five will get both the vaccine and vitamin A drops to fight blindness, adding that there were only seven reported cases of polio in the nation this year compared to 27 two years ago. Vaccination teams were going through villages and schools, with over 20 million doses administered this year.
