"Rubella Strikes Males"

Sunday Mail  (Australia) (www.thesundaymail.com.au) (10/06/02) P. 33; Mickelburgh, Renee

Recent Queensland Health figures find that the number of rubella cases in men is on the rise in Queensland.  This year alone there have been 142 cases of rubella diagnosed in the state, 10 more than last year.  Dr. Linda Selvey, the communicable disease unit manager for Queensland Health, confirmed that there were 67 cases of rubella diagnosed in the 20 to 24 year age group; of those infections, 56 cases were in males and 11 were in females.  "When those people were young, only females in that age group were vaccinated; none of the males have protection," Selvey noted.  An MMR vaccine has been available for all children for nearly a decade; however, prior to 1993 only girls received the rubella vaccine at age 12.
