Twenty-seven children from the northern Nigerian
state of Kaduna have been infected as a new wave of polio sweeps through the
country, dealing a severe blow to the anti-polio campaign currently underway
there. No polio cases had been reported in Kaduna for the last two years, and
this year 113 of the 720 polio cases reported worldwide are in Nigeria. World
Health Organization official Emmanuel Musa said that some Muslims in the state
have been hesitant to receive the vaccine due to fears that it reduces fertility
or causes AIDS. In an effort to alleviate these concerns, health officials are
asking Muslim physicians to analyze samples of the vaccine at two Kaduna
hospitals.
