Liberia started on Friday a national polio eradication initiative that aims to vaccinate at least 900,000 children from 5-6 October and 9-10 November.
Organised by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the first round of the polio eradication was synchronized with similar activities in the West African sub-region, news agencies reported.
President Charles Taylor administered the first dosage to six Liberian children when he launched the exercises at the Harbel Health Center in Firestone, Margibi County, The pro-government News daily reported.
Taylor at the same occasion declared 5 October national polio eradication day in Liberia.
Liberia vaccinated some 776,597 children against polio in 1999; 798,848 in 2000 and 890,747 in 2001, the agencies reported.
