"Pneumococcal Vaccination: Analysis of
Opportunities in an Inner-City Hospital" Archives of Internal Medicine (archinte.ama-assn.org)
(09/23/02) Vol. 162, No. 17,; Husain, Shahid; Slobodkin, David; Weinstein,
Robert A.
Adults at risk of developing pneumococcal
disease have less than optimal rates of vaccination for the illnesses. A recent
study looked at the potential coverage and costs of inoculating people at
inner-city inpatient medicine wards (IMWs), general medicine clinics (GMCs), and
emergency departments (EDs). Vaccine coverage was highest in the ED group, with
GMCs having the lowest rate. The best cost-benefit ratio was observed for IMWs,
with EDs and GMCs having about the same lower rate. The researchers conclude
that further evaluation of the ED initiative should be undertaken.
