U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Panel Alters Advice on Smallpox Shots"
Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (10/17/02) P. A3; Brown, David
Around 510,000 healthcare workers in 50 percent or more of the nation's hospitals should receive smallpox immunizations, according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The guidelines would apply to hospitals that have a respiratory isolation room. The original recommendations called for the vaccine only to be given to a few hundred people in each state. Part of the reason for the change may be that consulting workers in only a small number of hospitals would give the facilities a negative stigma.
