Liberia's Minister of Health and Social Welfare,
Dr. Peter S. Coleman, announced that over 100 unarmed, but uniformed military
personnel will assist medical personnel during the upcoming two-day free polio
vaccination program. Coleman noted that the military played a key role during
the successful first-round program, held in early October, and said their
involvement highlights the military's regard for the health of the population.
During the November vaccination effort, Liberian children will receive vitamin A
in addition to the polio vaccine. Coleman commended the U.S. Agency for
International Development, the European Union, Rotary International, the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the United
Nations' in-country team, and the international nongovernmental organizations in
helping Liberia to continue to implement successful National Immunization Days.
