"Liberia: Polio Eradication Exercise Starts"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (10/09/02)
Liberia's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare launched a national polio eradication campaign last week, targeting at least 900,000 children. President Charles Taylor declared October 5th, as national polio eradication day in Liberia as he administered the first dosage to six children during opening ceremonies at the Harbel Health Center in Firestone, Margibi County. This initiative coincides with similar programs taking place in the West African sub-region, according to news sources, and will be followed by a second round in November. The number of Liberian children vaccinated against polio has increased steadily over the past few years, rising from nearly 776,600 in 1999 to over 890,700 last year.
