"Kenya: Typhoid Fever Menace Now Under Check"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (10/28/02)
Health experts say that poverty, crowded and unsanitary living conditions, and unclean water supplies have worsened the typhoid fever crisis in Kenya, particularly in the Nyanza province, where 15 percent of the population is infected annually, as well as in Eastern province. Two year ago, the Kenya Medical Association, the Federation of African Women Educationists, Howse & McGeorge Laborex, and Aventis Pasteur launched an awareness and prevention campaign, targeting primary and secondary school children who, along with their teachers, were vaccinated after first being instructed on hygiene and other control measures. According to organizers, areas where typhoid education has been offered have seen substantial reductions in infection, although no studies have been done to document the effects of the education efforts.
