Health experts say that poverty, crowded and
unsanitary living conditions, and unclean water supplies have worsened the
typhoid fever crisis in Kenya, particularly in the Nyanza province, where 15
percent of the population is infected annually, as well as in Eastern province.
Two year ago, the Kenya Medical Association, the Federation of African Women
Educationists, Howse & McGeorge Laborex, and Aventis Pasteur launched an
awareness and prevention campaign, targeting primary and secondary school
children who, along with their teachers, were vaccinated after first being
instructed on hygiene and other control measures. According to organizers,
areas where typhoid education has been offered have seen substantial reductions
in infection, although no studies have been done to document the effects of the
education efforts.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to William C. Jarvis, September 28, 1820
"What's the point of vaccination if it doesn't protect you from the unvaccinated?"
