Fight terror with a flu shot
Program is test for smallpox inoculation
10/14/02 -
Getting a free flu shot Saturday could have national ramifications.
Region 13
of the state’s Anti-terrorism Task Force will conduct a test of the
Center for Disease Control’s plan for mass inoculations for the smallpox
vaccine on Saturday at the Butler Senior High School.
But instead
of using smallpox vaccine, the group will use the flu vaccine to test
the CDC’s system, said Dr. Tom McGill, an infectious disease specialist
at Butler Memorial Hospital.
In the late
1990s, the federal government had begun to work with state, county and
local officials on anti-terrorism and urban response plans in case of
attack, said Frank Mattis, the county’s emergency services director.
Mattis said
Saturday’s test of the CDC’s smallpox inoculation plan may be the first
in the nation using an actual shot, instead of simulating the giving of
vaccines.
“We are not
aware of other exercises in which a real shot was given,” he said.
