INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Fight Against Disease Ignores Border"
Sacramento Bee (www.sacbee.com) (10/19/02) P. B1; Bazar, Emily
Mass immunization services were launched during Mexico's 2nd annual Binational Health Week last week which expanded into Sacramento County, California, and 11 other California counties. Approximately 2,500 Mexican immigrant workers in the region took advantage of the free or reduced-cost HIV tests, diabetes screenings, eye exams, and immunizations. Organizers of the binational event, which is backed primarily by California's largest health care foundation, the California Endowment, say that so far, more than 24,000 legal and illegal immigrants have received some type of service through the program. Diana Bonta, director of California's Department of Health Services, says the program is vital to reducing the state's healthcare expenditures for the nearly 4 million mobile Mexicans living there.
