"Expert Calls for More Hepatitis Research"
South China Morning Post (www.scmp.com) (10/23/02) P. 4; Moy, Patsy
Liver specialist Dr. George Lau Ka-Kit of the University of Hong Kong says more should be done with hepatitis B in liver failure research. In a recent interview, Dr. Lau noted that liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver kills roughly one-third of hepatitis B patients by middle age and that three-quarters of the approximately 400 million people who are carriers of hepatitis B live in China. He added that Hong Kong should lead new research efforts because of its earlier pioneering treatments of liver disease, which takes the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in mainland China and Hong Kong each year. Lau and his research team are currently working on a therapeutic vaccine to treat carriers.
