"Doctors Demand Mass Jabs for Babies in TB War"

London Daily Mail (www.dailymail.co.uk) (10/25/02); Marsh, Beezy

In a bid to stem the resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) in Great Britain, physicians are calling for mass vaccinations for infants.  The move follows ominous news from the British Medical Association that the number of TB cases in Britain was approaching Third World levels.  Infectious disease expert Dr. Delane Shingardia of Barts and the London NHS Trust said the rate at which doctors are seeing cases of TB in children and young babies is alarming, and that physicians in London and other major cities should be vigilant about offering vaccinations to parents of young children.  With roughly 7,000 new cases diagnosed in Britain last year, physicians have sought government aid in fighting TB.  About 400 people die from TB in the United Kingdom every year.
