in Eastern Province" BBC Worldwide Monitoring

(10/04/02)
At least 33 cases of meningitis have been
reported, with three deaths associated with the disease, in the Kumoso lowlands
of eastern Burundi, and vaccinations against the disease in the area began this
month. However, Burundi currently only has 12,000 doses of the vaccine
available; officials say they are waiting for additional doses to cover the
province of Ruyigi.
Throughout the country, 63 people have died and 900 others have been infected
with meningitis since the beginning of September.
