Aussie HIV vaccine to be trialled

Human trials are expected to start next year on an Australian-developed vaccine to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Australian consortium is part of an international race by medical groups to develop a simple vaccine to halt the infection rate of the deadly disease.

Many of the groups are focusing on modified genetic material to boost immune system response.

Dr Stephen Kent, from Melbourne University, has told a conference in Canberra the theory behind the Australian-developed prime and boost vaccine could also be used to prevent other diseases.

"We're looking at similar technologies for hepatitis C, and tuberculosis and other viruses that can evade immune responses and tend to require specific cellular immunity, these specific killer 't cells' to control or clear the virus."
