"Angola Has World's Second Highest Infant Mortality Rate"
PANA Wire Service (allafrica.com) (10/25/02)
A U.N. study, conducted between September 2001 and June 2002, determined that one in seven newborn babies in Angola do not survive until their first birthday and that one in four children die before they reach their fifth birthday. Angola has the second-highest child mortality rate in the world, after Sierra Leone. The study found that deaths were due to illnesses, malnutrition, poor water quality, and insufficient sanitation, with malaria, HIV/AIDS, and vaccine-preventable diseases like measles taking a large toll.
