California Autism Growth Still Breaking Records

Based on the most current data report obtained from the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS), California has just experienced the largest quarterly increase in the number of new cases of level one autism in it’s history.

According to DDS, between July 6, 2001, and October 4, 2001, a record number 705 new cases of DSM IV autism entered California’s developmental services system, bringing the nine month total for 2001 to 2,069....more new cases in the first nine months of 2001 then reported in any other FULL YEAR on record. As with all of DDS’s autism case growth reporting, the 705 new cases do not include other autism spectrum disorders such as PDD, NOS, Asperger’s, etc.

The 2001 Third Quarter report represents: (1) the largest quarterly increase EVER reported by DDS, (2) constitutes a 54% increase over the year 2000 Third Quarter report, (3) shows that autism, for the first time, has now increased from, on average, 7 new children a day entering the system to 8 new children a day, (4) that 708 ADDITIONAL children with autism entered California’s system during the first nine months of 2001 then did during the first nine months of 2000, (5) that in October 2000 level one autism accounted for 28% of the total number of all new intakes (autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, epilepsy, and conditions similar to mental retardation) now in October 2001 level one autism accounted for 36% of all new intakes, and (6) that for the third straight quarter, autism has become the number one disability entering California’s developmental services system.

*Note: During this three month period more cases were added then in any other FULL YEAR between 1969-1994. In 1995, 752 new cases were added for the entire year.

Applying the year 2000 Fourth Quarter (Oct. 6, 2000 to Jan 4, 2001) figure of 566 new cases to 2001 (a conservative number considering that so far in 2001 we have exceeded the 2000 first quarter intakes by 68%, the second quarter by 38%, and third quarter by 54%) one could easily estimate that when all the numbers are in for 2001...conservatively estimated at 2,635 new cases....the year 2001 will produce over 250 more cases of level one autism then ALL the level one cases from 1994, 1995, and 1996 COMBINED!

Looking at what has happened in California since the release of the California Report produces even more horrifying evidence of the escalating autism epidemic. The California Report documented a 238% increase in cases of level one autism over an 11 year period from 1987-1998. Compare that to the 583% increase in cases of level one autism we have just experienced over a 2 ¾ year period from 1999-Oct. 2001.

As of October 4, 2001 California had 16,146 persons with level one (DSM) autism in it’s developmental services system.  It took California’s developmental services system 29 years (1969-1998) to reach 10, 206 cases of level one autism. It has taken California just 2 ¾ years (1999-Oct. 2001) to add an additional 5,942 new cases.

How can anyone deny the fact that we are witnessing a modern day epidemic? I am sure that if these horrifying numbers involved an infectious disease our public health community and others would have taken action years ago. For the sake of our children and the thousands of new children who will soon fall to this devastating disease, it is time for those who have simply been in denial or who have failed to observe what is happening in the real world to wake up and start dealing with reality.

My son and the thousands of others like him, along with the eight new children who were added today and those will be added to California’s system tomorrow and every day thereafter cannot wait for the “experts” to discover the truth involving the autism epidemic.
